LAR'S THIS & THAT
WORK RULES YOU SHOULD BREAK
Remember all that stuff your dad told you about making it in the "real world?" Most of it makes sense, the rest is garbage. Real Simple Magazine has 3 work rules that you should ignore:
Stay away from emotional topics: Even if it's personal and awkward, you should always bring a problem out into the open. Doing it early before it spirals out of control
Live at the office: Sometimes your best ideas hit you when you're in the garden, on a bike, or at the gym. Get out of the office.
Climb the career ladder: Bigger titles mean more stress. It's okay to not want a promotion. Make a lateral move or choose self-employment if that will make you happy.
FORGET ABOUT MR. RIGHT
We all make money mistakes, but according to the financial gurus at Oprah.com, one of the worst money mistakes we can make is falling in love!
Why? Because there are things you spend money on, and things that you cheap-out on. Then you meet Mr. Right, and he has his own ideas of things to spend money on and things to cheap-out on. Do your ideas mesh, or are they completely opposite. Being opposite can drain your accounts. Solution: Come up with a list of things you both value and build a budget to achieve those goals.
Resentment will build, though, if you ask your partner to stop doing things that make him happy..
Here are five other mistakes we make:
You Paid Too Much in Fees
You Started to Pay Extra on Your Mortgage to Pay Off Your House Early
You Forgot What Pampering Yourself Really Means
After a Financial Crash, You Transferred Your Savings to "Safe" Investments
You Used Your Debit Card to Pay for Gas, an Appliance, a Rental Car, Reserve a Hotel Room or Anything Online

CALL ME SMARTPHONE FACE
Do you feel your face is becoming a jowly, saggy mess? Blame your smartphone! Cosmetic surgeons are seeing more patients with sagging jowls, double chins, and lines that run from the corners of the mouth to the chin, and they're blaming modern technology -- specifically your smartphone and laptop. One surgeon told the London Evening Standard:
"If you sit for hours with your head bent slightly forward, staring at your iPhone or laptop screen, you may shorten the neck muscles and increase the gravitational pull on the jowl area, leading to a drooping jawline."
It's easy to fix. A number of cosmetic surgery options are available from a chinplant ($7-grand), to chin-sculpting filler ($950). Or you can just keep your chin up when you're on your computer or smartphone. That's free.
THEY SAY IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY
A statistician put together a chart of all 365 days of the year based on the total births on each of those days between 1973 and 1999. Check out these highlights.
The least-popular date for birthdays was February 29th, obviously . . . since it only occurs once every four years on a leap year, when there are actually 366 days in a year.
The second least popular day is December 25th. Apparently that birthday is already TAKEN.
The most popular date for births is September 16th. That's JUST about nine months after the holiday season. And actually, all ten of the most common birthdates are in September.
September 11th is the 24th most common . . . but that's now dropping.
July and August have the second and third most births.
Major holidays have a lot fewer births around them . . . people really don't induce on those days. July 4th has the fewest births of any summer day, and July 5th is second. Thanksgiving and New Year's Day are also sparse.
Valentine's Day has the most births of ANY day in the first five months of the year. The 13th of every month also has a dip in births. It seems to be the least popular day overall.
8 TIPS FOR FAMILY TRAVEL
--Go to flickr.com and search for your vacation spot to see real people photos of the sites you’re considering. This may help your vacation planning with the family.
--Check your airline’s foreign partner, which may have a cheaper rate for the very same flight.
--If you’re taking the dog, don’t forget the Frisbee and water bowl.
--Clip restaurant fast-food coupons and keep them in the glove compartment for inevitable vacation stops.
--Before you travel overseas, call the 800 number on your health insurance card and ask for a number that will work in y our destination country. That 800 number doesn’t always work.
--If you’re going to return to a hotel, ask the housekeeper which room to request next time.
--In developing counties, ask a local pharmacist for restaurant recommendations. (They tend to speak English and know the safest places.)
--Try toothpaste for bee stings.

COFFEE ANYONE?
According to new research by the National Cancer Institute, drinking at least SIX CUPS of coffee a day isn't just "not bad" for you . . . it's GREAT for you.
Men who drink at least six cups of coffee a day had a 10% lower chance of dying during the course of the 14-year study. For women it was even better . . . they had a 15% lower chance of dying.
Te researchers aren't exactly sure why coffee is saving lives, though. Drinking regular versus decaf didn't make a difference, so it's not that. And they haven't found any hidden antioxidants in coffee that make it good for you.
There's something SOOTHING about coffee . . . either making it, drinking it, or the social aspects of drinking it with other people. That's good for your mental health, which is also good for your physical health.
JUST SAYIN'
According to a survey by a British clothing website called Very.co.uk, women want to know the TRUTH when they're trying on clothes. 82% of women say that when they ask if something makes their butt look big, they want their significant other to be honest. And 70% think that their man actually WILL answer truthfully.
But most men KNOW BETTER. 64% of guys admit that they've LIED to their wife when they were asked that question, and "said the right thing." Names. I want names.
WEIRD, BUT TRUE NEWS
Seattle police are scratching their heads about this one. A car prowler shattered a window of a parked Jeep, stole nothing and left behind a little something for the car's owner ...a dozen tortillas scattered across the floor. The crime happened last week near the University of Washington.
Humored by the break-in, police were moved to pun, saying, "The Seattle Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind car prowlers that you shouldn't break in to something that's nachos." That's good. Really good.
STAYING HEALTHY TODAY
GOOD NEWS: AMERICANS ARE LIVING LONGER. THE BAD NEWS...
The CDC released their annual state of the union's heath, and yes, we're living longer, but we're also getting bigger. Here's where we stand:
Men are living to 76, which is up 6 years since 1980. Women are living to 81, up four years over the same time span.
Most common killer (a quarter of all deaths each year) for both men and women: Heart disease.
Deaths from stroke dropped by a third for men and women.
Cancer deaths dropped by 15% for men; 11% for women.
Even though the percentage has gone down since the 1990's, nearly 1/2 with high blood pressure are doing nothing about it.
Obesity: Up in all age groups since 1994. One-fifth of adults are obese along with 20% of kids
Only half of adults get what the government thinks is enough physical activity.
Drug poisoning deaths have doubled between 2000 and 2008. Opioid (oh-pee-oid) painkillers take up 40% of those deaths.
Coverage: Private health insurance covered a third of personal health care expenses. 14% came out of pocket, while the rest was paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, and others.
GOOD NEWS STORY
Victoria Shaw's Yorkshire terrier, Louis, recently saved her life by pressing a medical panic button. She says, "He's just a pet but I've been training him to hit the button just in case. But it's always been just a big game. This is the first time he's done it for real.
Shaw goes on to say she had been in the shower and was just coming out when her slipper got caught under the rug and she tripped. She hit her back and shoulder and felt her leg going underneath her and heard a crack. She thought she'd broken her knee, but hadn't.
She did break her glasses, and she can't see anything without them. He must have thought 'this is not a game this is for real', and hit the panic button. He was right beside me, right in my face - he wouldn't leave me." London medics quickly arrived and saved Shaw.
